By its very definition, morality is the distinction between right and wrong. Morality provides the bedrock ethical foundation of a society. Unfortunately, in 21st Century western relativism, the definition of morality has become clouded, and in many ways what is moral can be defined by the individual or by the changing interpretations of the government and the courts.
When America was established, the founding fathers openly acknowledged that the moral foundation for this country was built upon the natural sense of right and wrong instilled in mankind by its Creator. Thomas Jefferson stated, “Man has been subjected by his Creator to the moral law, of which his feelings, or conscience as it is sometimes called, are the evidence with which his Creator has furnished him.”
Planned Parenthood & the New Definition of Moral Behavior
When Nations Die was published in 1994, and the title of this week’s chapter appropriately described an “Increase in Immorality.” This is no longer the case today. Instead, we live in an amoral society in which the very definition of morality is as changing as the wind. Take, for example, the statement Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) made on the senate floor as he argued against a bill to defund Planned Parenthood: “It’s our responsibility in the Senate to assure that American women have access to care. It’s our obligation to protect our wives, our sisters, our daughters, our granddaughters–protect them from the absurd policies of a Republican Party that’s lost its moral compass.” According to Reid, it is immoral to talk about defunding Planned Parenthood! Unbelievable. When confronted by the horrific video evidence of Planned Parenthood’s indescribable treatment of human babies, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards declared the investigative techniques used by the journalists as “the most disgusting part” of the videos. “The most disgusting the part of this to me is these folks lied, lied to gain access to clinics,” Richards told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.
Not only is this a clear sign of a nation in decline, but it is also a clear sign of God’s temporal judgment upon this people. Romans 1:289ff describes God’s temporal judgment: “And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.” –Chris Eller
